You have worked hard to build the explosive strength in your legs so you can jump higher in Basketball. Now you have a higher vertical jump than when you started your training, but are you still reaching your full potential? Many athletes fall short of their potential because they have not worked on the process of the jump itself. There is more to just running and making a jump, there is technique in all of this.
The more speed you have built up going into the jump, the higher you should be able to go. With the increased height from the extra speed you will have a longer hang time. As you dribble, pick the ball up about 10 feet from your target jump off point. Keep driving forward for two steps to set your self up. You should have the ball in one hand if you are able to palm it, otherwise hold it with two hands.

As you approach your jump, plant your forward leg and bend it as you lower yourself for the jump. You will want to have the knee of your lead leg either right over your toes or a little ahead of them. The best foot placement is from heel to toe, you will rock forward to the toes as you push off to help accentuate the momentum. As you push off your toes, simultaneously you must drive your leg into the floor and jump upwards. As you become airborne drive your other leg upwards to assist.

Jumping is a whole body event; you do not just use your legs you must have your arms involved also. As you make the jump, drive your arms upward to help increase your momentum even more. Extend your arm with the ball outward towards the hoop and reach for the rim. You will have to be able to reach at least 4 to 6 inches above the basket or the ball will just bounce off the rim.

Practice jumping whenever you have a chance because you will get better at it as the moves become natural to you. You will get to the point where you will not have to think about it, it just happens. Once a ball is set into play it must remain in play on the table until the ball is hit off the table, a goal is scored, a dead ball is declared, or a time out is called. A time out can only be called when a player is in possession of the ball. A time in will only be called when both players acknowledge that they are ready to resume the game play.

A ball is declared dead only when it has stopped it’s motion and neither player can reach the ball with any of their rods.

Remember that these are only the basic rules. You can choose to follow more advanced rules if you wish, but these make a great starting point for players who just want some friendly fun with football.

The winner of the 1913 Derby was a horse named Craganour who was then disqualified and the result was awarded to Aboyeur who was a 100/1 shot. The disqualification of Craganour was shrouded in controversy,the horse was owned by Bower Ismay who was the brother of the then infamous Bruce Ismay a man who had been accused of disguising himself as a woman to enable himself a place on a lifeboat to escape the sinking Titanic. In 1991 the race was won by the widest winning margin ever, 10 lengths, by Shergar who was later to be abducted by the IRA and whose body has never been recovered. The great Lester Piggott holds the record for the most Derby wins with 9, only one woman, Alex Greaves, has ridden in the Derby to date. The fastest winner was Lammtara in 1991 and the 1838 winner Amato never raced before or after his win. There are few races that capture the imagination of the racing public quite like the English Derby, for over two hundred years the best thoroughbreds of their generation have showed their best at the Epsom course, long may it continue.
